Tie bars and tie clasps. That’s what I’ve been on the prowl for lately when thrifting, antiquing, and garage sailing. The wells are dry in the quirky committee and winter is in full force. I’ll have to wait till spring for people to really clean out their garages and grandparent’s drawers. Then, more treasures will surface. Until then, I’ve been browsing around on the internets and Etsy.com is usually an untapped resource when it comes to finding mens goods.
Writing utensil + Utiliatarian menswear accessory = Pencil tie bar. Snag it before I do. How much do I want a night shirt? Not a lot. But this still looks comfortable.
Ebenezer Scrooge, anyone? Nothing would bring me more joy than to lounge in this with a glass of scotch, a pipe and a pair of slippers as I ease into a book that I’ve been putting off on a miserable winter day.
Back in the farm country of rural southwest Missouri, one of my old man’s favorite pastimes during our occasional white Christmases is to read “Snow-Bound,” an 1866 narrative poem by John Greenleaf Whittier. It reminisces about the getting stuck in the family homestead and hunkering down to tell stories to each other in front of the fire. Here’s a taste of the longer version:
Yeah, yeah. It’s snowing outside. There are 20 inches outside my apartment, and more on the way to the beat of two inches per hour. Bring it on.
Might be a little late now, but for the next snowpocalypse, you might want to consider these: Sure, there may be cooler-looking options out there. But what’s more stylish than being warm and mobile while pocketing the extra cash you saved? Go spend that on some hot chocolate and good winter literature. Then snowshoe on home and get snowbound.
I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t sure why I picked up this green & black pair of striped socks from the sale rack at J.Crew for $2.99 + an additional 40% = less than a cup of coffee. I figured, “Hey, I could make these hideous, and quite frankly, haunting pair of green & black prison bar-like socks work.” Paired with an equally ugly pair of brown-I-think-they-might-be-a-little-black cap toe dress shoes from the thrift ($5.99) and my Slim Jim Dry Coated Black Wash ($75 Nudie winter sale).

3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2011 gave me some ideas. Just pair it with a patent black leather boot and perhaps some dark army & forest green hues. A little dark for my taste, but we’ll see.
